Websites are the digital storefronts of the modern business world. Online interactions have become the norm for everything from casual browsing to major transactions, and consumer expectations for website design and functionality have raised the bar for what constitutes a credible and acceptable business website.
The consequences of an outdated or clunky website extend far beyond inconvenience — it can erode trust, damage brand perception, and ultimately hinder a company’s bottom line, according to our latest survey. The stakes are high and the margin for error has all but vanished with competitors just a click away.

The Consumer Perspective
We conducted a comprehensive survey to better grasp the vital role of how consumers view small and medium-sized business websites and how and what influences their shopping experience. From abandoned carts to lost trust, our findings reveal just how much website quality impacts purchasing decisions, consumer trust, and overall brand reputation.
Yet despite these imperatives, many businesses struggle to keep pace with consumer demands and technological advancements. To bridge the gap between expectation and reality, our research aims to provide essential guidance for business leaders and marketers to optimize or reshape their online presence and eCommerce strategies.
The results underscored the importance of website design and functionality in earning consumer trust and remaining competitive in an erratic and unpredictable consumer marketplace.
Further findings from the survey of 500 U.S. consumers include:
- 75% said they have skipped an online purchase due to an outdated or unprofessional-looking website.
- 93% expressed concerns about information security when encountering poorly designed websites.
- 92% implied increased confidence in products or services when a business website functions smoothly.
These results emphasize that a well-designed, secure, and user-friendly website is a necessity, and small businesses can’t afford to overlook their digital footprint any longer. A company’s website often serves as the first point of contact with potential customers, and an outdated site pushes customers into the arms of competitors.
The First Impression
If you walked into a store with disorganized racks and shelves, poor signage, and a cashier still learning how to operate the till, you’d likely turn around and leave, right? The same principle applies to websites. Our findings show that 71% of consumers can spot a DIY website at first click.
“Businesses are walking a digital tightrope with their online presence,” said Joe Warnimont, HostingAdvice security and technical expert. “The website is like a first date with a potential customer, and our survey shows that 75% of people will swipe left on a purchase if a site looks outdated. But it’s not about being fancy. It’s about making a good first impression. A smooth secure website tells customers you’re trustworthy and professional, both of which are essential for converting clicks into customers.”
The User Experience Paradox
The survey also found that the user experience on SMB websites often leaves much to be desired.
- 72% of survey participants said they find small business websites difficult to navigate.
- 57% said they have encountered multiple error messages when browsing such sites.
A business’s credibility diminishes with every clunky interface, amateur design, and error message. A professional, fluid website isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s an indication of dependability and proficiency. The survey highlights that 92% of consumers surveyed said they feel more confident about a business when its website runs smoothly.
Small businesses should consider investing in professional web design support and regular maintenance of site hosting and content because these tools are critical for growth and customer retention.
What Small Businesses Can Do
Businesses need to take proactive measures to reinforce their online presence. Here are some key steps to take from the HostingAdvice team:
- Prioritize regular website updates: Just as you’d renovate a physical store, your website needs design updates every two to five years to remain current and appealing. You should update your content regularly as well.
- Invest in robust security: 93% of consumers surveyed said they were worried about information security, and transparent security measures boost trust.
- Commit to smart and seamless navigation. Having a well-organized, seamless website design is vital. Considering user testing to identify and resolve UX issues.
- Conduct regular maintenance: Treat your website as you’d treat a physical storefront, a critical piece of business equipment that needs monthly, quarterly, and annual tune-ups. Update your software and plugins to keep your site in shape.
- Consider professional support: DIY websites have their place, but our survey shows that consumers have an eye for amateur designs. Investing in professional web support and design can pay for itself in credibility and conversions.
Small businesses that double down on their websites now are positioning themselves for future success. Those who avoid website improvements risk being left behind as we move further into a competitive digital landscape.
The website is often the first and sometimes the only chance to make an impression on potential customers. With 75% of consumers saying they will skip a purchase due to an outdated website; can you afford to neglect yours?
