The one-sentence site generation model popularized by builders like Wix and Shopify is now arriving in the WordPress ecosystem: GoDaddy just launched Airo Site Designer, making it among the first host-built AI tools designed to create WordPress sites from a single prompt.

GoDaddy’s Senior Director of Software Development, Sergej Grivcov, said the days of coding and template-picking are over, pointing to the tool’s simplicity on a platform long known for its learning curve: “If you can describe your business in one sentence … you publish in minutes and put your time where it matters.”

While AI builders are nothing new, bringing them into WordPress kind of is. Only a few other providers, such as 10Web and Hostinger, have rolled out their own AI-driven builders for the platform.

And with GoDaddy’s presence, the trend that many industry folks have been watching is now crystal-clear: The ecosystem that has always leaned on themes, plugins, and page-builder tools is in the middle of an evolution.

No Surprise Here: Clients Want Simple and Fast

In its official press release, GoDaddy said it built Airo directly in response to customer requests. Research from its Small Business Research Lab found that clients prioritize one thing that will shock nobody: They want to get online effortlessly.

“Because these are true WordPress sites, our customers can extend them with 60,000+ plugins, WooCommerce, themes, memberships and more,” Grivcov told HostingAdvice. “Airo Site Designer gives our customers the best of both worlds: the speed and simplicity of AI site generation, and the full power, ownership, and extensibility of WordPress.”

The research also showed where many struggle with AI adoption. Among those who have tried AI, 39% said they don’t feel confident using it, and 35% said they felt unfamiliar with the technology itself. That discrepancy “highlights the need for simple, accessible AI tools that make website building easy for everyone,” said GoDaddy.

The other side of the coin is pairing that simplicity with the world’s most popular CMS, because historically speaking, SMBs looking for ease of use have gone to SaaS builders like Wix, Shopify, or Squarespace.

But there are limitations, depending on the kind of customization. WordPress has a long-standing reputation for customization and scalability — if you know how to use it. The reality is that most business owners don’t, which is why they’ve typically gravitated toward simpler SaaS platforms.

The hosting industry itself has been evolving quickly, with some companies scrambling just to keep pace, while others stay ahead by developing tools that people didn’t even know they wanted.

As an open-source ecosystem built on community collaboration, WordPress is a different game. And it’s those types of intricacies that make the arrival of AI a bit less cut and dried than in closed SaaS platforms.

If GoDaddy can make WordPress feel as easy as Wix or Shopify, it’s hard to see it as anything other than a win-win: It lowers the entry barrier for SMBs that would otherwise bypass WordPress altogether, while also giving GoDaddy a new way to attract and retain clients through the fresh service.

But Grivcov said the GoDaddy vision goes further: “We see this release as an early piece of the puzzle toward fully AI-powered WordPress. Beyond building a site, Airo will increasingly help with ongoing site and user experience management and optimization.”

It’s a Pivotal Moment for WordPress

GoDaddy’s Airo isn’t necessarily an indicator that every provider needs to build a gen-AI web builder of its own, especially not for WordPress.

But something to keep in mind is, just as automation and gen-AI became the tools SMBs gravitated toward, the industry will likely see a similar dynamic in WordPress AI-based web building.

“GoDaddy sees AI as a core enabler for entrepreneurs through speed, simplicity and an integrated ecosystem,” Grivcov said. “[Airo] demonstrates how AI can compress the time from idea to live business presence from weeks to minutes.”

Airo actually comes at an interesting moment where WordPress’s future has been considered to be hanging in the balance by some users. Yet, its loyal providers continue to insist it is “far from dead” — a narrative that has circulated in the community as WordPress has been finding its place in a new market dominated by SaaSers.

Michael Cunningham from WP Rocket told HostingAdvice exactly that after attending WordCamp U.S. 2025, stressing that WordPress is evolving alongside the industry: “[The WordPress] community is thriving, collaboration is stronger than ever, and the rise of new partnerships is fueling innovation across the ecosystem.”
