When I raised an eyebrow, he went on to explain that the recent data breach from the National Public Data (NPD), a background checking service, compromised the private information of nearly 3 billion people — making it one of the biggest data breaches in history.

Almost immediately, I started researching where my personal information might be exposed. Apparently, my email, phone number, and address had all been breached by several different sources, including Canva, Ticketmaster, and Facebook.

One of the biggest reasons these breaches happen is due to a poorly managed network. Cyberattackers thrive on even the smallest network security gap because it’s the best way to get inside.

So, if NPD, for example, had kept their network more secure, then maybe the data of 2.9 billion people wouldn’t have been compromised.

Some of us may also remember the 2021 event when Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp saw a major outage. It disrupted millions of users, and it’s all because its network wasn’t properly configured.

Auvik was founded in 2011 by three engineers, Alex Hoff, Marc Morin, and David Yach, who were tired of network management being synonymous with complicated.

Over the past 13 years, Auvik has evolved a lot, but now it mainly focuses on helping Managed Service Providers (MSPs) and IT departments.

“Being fully cloud-based allows us to provide additional alerts and insights, and we can gather data across all networks, no matter where the devices are,” John added. “We can also test other things, like giving IT professionals the ability to check if their network is up by pinging it from the outside, so it’s easier to determine if the issue is with the VPN, the network itself, the router, or the firewall.”

Take iPhones, for example. Every year, a new model is announced, and each one goes through familiar stages: development (building and testing before release), maintenance (ongoing software updates and security patches), and eventually, end of life when a newer model is announced.

“For example, we can alert you when your firmware is out of date or when a device is nearing the end of its life. In the future, we’re planning to automate this. You’ll be able to patch or upgrade firmware across all similar devices with just one click. Imagine clicking a button to update all your Cisco 3500 switches at once — that’s what we’re working on, and we expect it to be ready next year,” said John. “You’re three versions behind? We’ll let you know.”

John also mentioned that Auvik is currently beta-testing an endpoint agent. It’ll be designed to monitor network performance in hybrid work environments.

In hybrid work setups, there’s still a network in the office, but there’s also the network wherever the employee is working remotely (e.g., their home Wi-Fi).

“We’re currently beta-testing a solution that monitors an employee’s laptop network, no matter where they are,” said John.

The idea is to create a solution that can monitor the network performance of an employee’s laptop, regardless of where they’re working, ensuring that network issues can be tracked and resolved, whether the employee is at the office or working remotely.
