
Even if you’re not a gamer, you’ve probably heard of Minecraft. It’s developed a bit of a cult following since its release in 2011. I was never really into it myself, but I distinctly remember my younger sister spending hours and hours playing it on the family computer.
The game has exploded in popularity since then.
How popular is Minecraft, you ask? Below, I share Minecraft statistics to show you just how popular the game has become in the last decade plus.
1. Minecraft Has Sold More Than 300 Million Copies
Minecraft has sold more than 300 million copies.1 Mojang Studios released the news at 2024’s Minecraft Live event.
That makes Minecraft one of the best-selling video games of all time, joining Tetris (520+ million) and Grand Theft Auto V (200+ million) at the top of the list.

2. Minecraft Has Produced More Than $3 Billion in Revenue
When a game is as popular as Minecraft, you know it’s going to make a lot of money. Since 2011, Minecraft has generated more than $3 billion in revenue.2
Game creators have their mobile app to thank for a huge chunk of this. Minecraft’s mobile revenue accounts for about 41% of its total revenue, which makes sense to me. People like to play on the go.
3. Mobile Minecraft Generated More Than $98 Million in 2024
Speaking of mobile Minecraft, many Minecraft players prefer having the game on their phones. So much in fact, the mobile version of Minecraft raked in more than $98 million in 2024.2
Minecraft saw its highest demand during the pandemic, with mobile revenue peaking at $161 million in 2021. I wouldn’t describe myself as a gamer, but even I was gaming during that time.
4. Minecraft Players Streamed More Than 37 Million Hours on Twitch in One Month
In April 2025, Minecraft players streamed 37,444,076 hours of the game.3 It looks like the game’s popularity is still holding on from the pandemic. It’s also the 6th most-watched game on YouTube, streaming more than 20 million hours a month.18
5. Minecraft Had About 225 Million Monthly Users in Q2 2025
In Q2 2025, Minecraft’s active monthly users totaled 225,778,010.3 The release of the Minecraft movie must have had more people hopping online than usual!

6. Minecraft Has 55.17 Million Daily Active Players
Minecraft’s daily active players reached a whopping 55.17 million this year, proving the video game is here to stay.6 This is a steep jump from 2023, where the average number of daily players was 25.42 million. Talk about a boom in growth!
7. The Average Age of a Minecraft User Is 24 years old
Helen Chiang, the head of Mojang Studios, says the average age of a Minecraft player is 24 years old.7 This number may come as a surprise for some (me included). But Minecraft’s audience base has become pretty diverse, with many adults enjoying the game, too.
8. About 15% of Minecraft Players are 30 to 65 Years Old
Older adults like Minecraft, too. About 15% of Minecraft players are between the ages of 30 and 65 years old, while only 0.5% are 65-plus.2
9. Ages 15 to 21 Make Up 43% of the Minecraft User Base
Players between the ages of 15 and 21 make up 43% of the Minecraft community.6 The next largest age groups are 22 to 30 and less than 15 years old, with a 21% and 20.6% share each.

10. About 54% of Minecraft Users are Male
Boys make up 54% of the Minecraft user base.6 Meanwhile, 32% of Minecraft players are girls (the remaining percentage is not reported). Gaming has changed a lot over the years, with its demographics evolving quite a bit.
11. About 21% of Minecraft’s Active Players Live in the U.S.
Minecraft is a global game with a global community. However, I see some regions stand out for having more players than others. For example, the U.S. has the largest active community of Minecraft players, with 21% of players living there.6
12. Boys Primarily Watch Minecraft YouTube Content
If you’re not a gamer, you probably aren’t aware that streaming other people’s gameplay is a regular pastime.
Streaming Minecraft videos is most popular among boys, with about 32% of them watching some form of Minecraft YouTube content.2 When it comes to girls, they prefer playing instead of watching. Only about 9% of girls watch Minecraft-related videos on YouTube.
13. Minecraft Had a 25% Player Increase at the Start of COVID
Thanks to COVID-19, people spent more time at home and found new hobbies, like playing Minecraft. The start of the pandemic brought a 25% increase in players.11 Personally, I played Sims during that time.

Games played a massive role in keeping people connected during lockdown. Between you and me, I played Sims during that time.
14. Minecraft Grew by 14 Million Users Between 2020 and 2021
The COVID-19 pandemic gave people more opportunities to game at home than ever before. Minecraft reaped the benefits of this increased demand. Minecraft grew by more than 14 million active users between 2020 and 2021.2
15. More Than 700 Million Users Play Minecraft China
Minecraft China Edition is a localized version of the game that was built for mainland Chinese audiences and released in 2017. You must have a valid Chinese citizen ID to play. Today, Minecraft China has more than 700 million users playing its edition.6
16. The U.S. Has More Than 4,000 Minecraft Servers
Gaming servers have become popular as players dive deeper into the gaming world and community. Buying a server is often the next step for someone who wants a more elevated game experience.
The U.S. has about 4,070 active Minecraft servers, whereas the global count is 10,000-plus.6
17. About 80% of Kids Play Minecraft on Multiplayer
Unlike adults, younger Minecraft players prefer to play with friends.

About 11% of parents play Minecraft with their children on a regular basis.2 And, about 80% of children play Minecraft with their friends, family members, or other online players.

The beauty of Minecraft is that you can play Minecraft solo or in multiplayer mode and still have the same pleasurable experience. Actually, 50% of adult Minecraft users prefer flying solo.2
19. The Longest Time Spent Playing Minecraft Is 38 Hours and 1 Second
If you think you spend too much time playing Minecraft, think again. Alexandre Jouniaux from Vitry-sur-Seine, Ile de France, France, achieved the record for the longest time spent playing Minecraft on June 7, 2021.12
He played Minecraft for 38 hours and 1 second, starting from June 5, 2021. Alexandre beat the previous record in the Guinness World Records Book by more than two hours. You go, Alexandre!
20. Minecraft Had 1 Trillion Views on YouTube in 2021
Bored social distancers spent a lot of time streaming Minecraft during the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, Minecraft became YouTube’s most viewed game in 2021, with 1 trillion views.11
YouTube has more than 35,000 creators from 150 countries in its Minecraft community.
21. Minecraft Launched on November 18, 2011
Markus “Notch” Persson created Minecraft using the Java programming language in 2009 and released Minecraft Classic on May 27, 2009.8 He later worked with Jens “Jeb” Bergensten on the development.
Mojang Studios released the full version in 2011.

22. It Only Took 6 Days to Create the First Version of Minecraft
It only took Markus “Notch” Persson six days to develop Minecraft Classic, the first version of Minecraft.16 It was Markus’ first big game, and he created it in a week! Imagine his surprise when a project he whipped up in less than a week became one of the best-selling games of all time.
23. Minecraft Won the Game of the Year Award in 2012
Minecraft is no stranger to awards and recognition. The National Academy of Video Game Testers and Reviewers Corp (NAVGTR) presented Minecraft with the Game of the Year award in 2012.11 It also won the Favorite Video Game award in 2023.
24. The First Mobile Version Was Released on September 15, 2017
Minecraft’s first mobile release was for iOS devices and launched on September 15, 2017.2 The mobile app for Android was released about a month later on October 12, 2017. Its mobile audience is now a massive anchor for the franchise.
25. Microsoft Acquired Minecraft in 2014
On September 15, 2014, Microsoft announced its acquisition of Minecraft.9 But get this: many people thought Microsoft was crazy for spending so much on the game.
This $2.5 billion purchase placed Mojang Studios and the Minecraft franchise under its video game publisher, Xbox Game Studios.
Microsoft may have paid a lot for the purchase, but I’d say it was worth it in the long run.
26. Minecraft Education Launched in 2016
Mojang Studios launched Minecraft: Education Edition (now known as Minecraft Education) on November 1, 2016.13
Expanding Minecraft into education was a genius move. It’s helped students learn in a new and engaging way while strengthening their collaboration skills.
27. More Than 35 Million People Use Minecraft Education
I had never heard of Minecraft Education before researching this article, but it turns out more than 35 million students and teachers in 115 countries are licensed to use Minecraft Education in their classrooms.6

Time ticks differently in the world of Minecraft. A full day in Minecraft only takes 20 minutes to happen in real time.11 Day and night also spread out equally, with 10 minutes given for each.
29. The Best Year for Minecraft Revenue Was 2018
Minecraft made the most total revenue in 2018, when it accumulated about $500 million in one year.2 But don’t let that make you think it’s not a higher earner anymore.

The years 2016 and 2020 trail pretty close, with $420 million and $415 million, respectively. Its lowest year was 2014, the same year Microsoft announced its acquisition of the game, with $165 million annual global revenue. It’s clear to me that Microsoft was playing the long game!
30. Minecraft Had Its Highest Mobile Numbers in 2021
The year 2021 is a recurrent theme for Minecraft. This is the same year Minecraft also saw its highest global mobile revenue ever. The mobile version of Minecraft generated $161 million of annual revenue at the time, a 13% increase from 2020.5
31. Minecraft Marketplace Made $1 Million in Two Months
Minecraft creators made more than $1 million in earnings only two months after Microsoft launched its Minecraft Marketplace in 2017.14 This number only discloses how much the creators made in those first two months.
32. Minecraft Earth Had 2.5 Million Downloads in the First 12 Months
Everyone remembers the AR/VR boom just before the pandemic, right? Well, Minecraft Earth, an augmented reality version of Minecraft, launched in 2019 and had 2.5 million downloads just within the first year.14
Most of the downloads happened in the U.S. (1.2 million of them). However, Minecraft Earth shut down on June 30, 2021, because of COVID restrictions.

Minecraft’s most popular edition is the Bedrock Edition.15
The Bedrock Edition is written in C++ instead of Java.

Gamers can earn up to 107 achievements on Minecraft. The most popular of these achievements include “Taking Inventory,” “Getting Wood,” and “Time to Mine!”16

A Minecraft Movie was released in April of 2025 and meteorically rose to become the second-highest-grossing game film of all time.17

Minecraft is one of the best-selling games of all time, and it’s pretty clear to me why. It’s easy to learn and gives people the chance to create something in their own world.
People of all ages like it, from children to adults. You can play at home, by yourself, on the go, or with friends. I’m starting to wonder why I never gave it a shot! If you’re like me, maybe it’s time to finally download it.
