AI-fueled cyberattacks are hitting eCommerce sites harder and faster in 2025, and clients are noticing.

“Our eCommerce clients expect more than just a free SSL and backups — they expect real-time, always-on protection,” said Daniel Kanchev, Product Director at SiteGround.

There’s good reason as to why: Agentic AI and automated exploits have completely accelerated threat cycles, with botnets scanning at 36,000 hits per second, 80% of phishing is now AI-generated, and ransomware surged 149% already this year.

“Online threats become more sophisticated, so store owners naturally want more than a safety net; they want assurance that their host is actively helping them prevent issues before they happen,” added ScalaHosting’s CEO, Hristo Rusev.

Maybe that’s a polite wake-up call for hosts to take full ownership of their features.

Because, while once upon a time they were just the backend provider, clients expect so much more from their hosts today.

How AI Reshaped Customer Expectations

One key trend Rusev highlighted is that clients are becoming more informed about the mechanics behind their hosting services. For example, many are now asking about:

Take that last point seriously.

Generative AI is a double-edged sword: It can speed up workflows and improve operations, but it also empowers bad actors to scale smarter attacks.

“Attackers are now using generative AI to write exploit code and inject malware at unprecedented speed,” said Hostinger’s VP of Product Saulius Lazaravičius.

For example, today’s phishing emails are able to mimic brand communications flawlessly, exploit code is deployed within mere seconds, and botnets run scans with incredible efficiency.

Of course, these attacks aren’t following old patterns.

They’re adaptive, scalable, automatic, and fast, which is why clients are losing patience with outdated, reactive protections.

Lazaravičius added: “eCommerce clients expect real-time, intelligent protection — tools that detect threats, patch weaknesses, and adapt to evolving risks automatically.”

Security Should Be Built-In, Not Added On

One of the most persistent problems in web hosting is the way some providers package bare-minimum features as premium offerings. (Or worse: have the nerve to upsell them as add-ons.)

It looks like today’s clients know better. Like a continental breakfast at a hotel, daily backups, malware scanning, and firewalls aren’t luxuries anymore.

And when providers don’t offer the bare minimum, customers notice.

In fact, Salesforce reports that 80% of B2B and B2C buyers judge companies by the experience they deliver — not just their product. That means hosting clients are evaluating how providers support them, not just what’s on a feature list.

“Today, your web host should be a true partner in your security posture, not just a hosting provider,” said Lazaravičius.

In other words, hosting clients want managed security to be the default. And Kanchev has seen this firsthand, adding: “We don’t expect merchants to configure security settings — they should just onboard and go.”

Here’s how top hosts are responding:

FeatureWhy
Embedded security by defaultClients want server-side malware detection, WAFs, data isolation, and compliance (GDPR/PCI) without them being paid extras
Automation + human supportSiteGround quarantines threats and escalates to staff; ScalaHosting’s SShield preemptively stops attacks; Hostinger blends AI defense with tutorials and dedicated support
Speed in response, not just load time“Speed isn’t just page load — it’s reaction time,” Kanchev says. At the end of the day, faster threat detection means less lost revenue

“Choose a host that acts — not advertises — security,” Kanchev emphasized. “Look for evidence of proactive services: malware scanners, blacklist monitoring, managed firewall, auto‑patching.”

As AI lowers the barrier to entry for cybercriminals, hosting providers have no choice but to fight fire with fire. And those that do — and actually meet those new expectations — will be the ones that earn long-term trust.
