How HostDime’s Expansive Datacenter Space and Localized Customer Support are Helping Modern Enterprises Deliver Mission-Critical Apps

TL; DR: In 2001, Manny Vivar had a dream, a lone server, and $50 in his pocket. In just a few short years, he turned these modest resources into the global datacenter infrastructure provider HostDime. Since its inception, HostDime has operated on the philosophy of innovation and providing enterprise-grade hosting solutions for large businesses worldwide. The company’s virtual, cloud, bare-metal, and colocation services are powered by its thousands of square feet of datacenter space. By coupling this with personalized support and a hands-on approach to managed services, HostDime is relieving pressure from the IT departments of modern enterprises, helping them seamlessly deliver mission-critical apps and save on operational costs.

MobsterBoss is a popular browser- and text-based game with a sizeable cult following. Operating continuously for more than a decade, the game begins a new round every 10 days. The site houses upward of 40,000 players — some of whom are staff. In fact, Sonnie, MobsterBoss’s Owner, is famous for having never missed an EOR (End of Round). Because the game must maintain a smooth operation for thousands of players on an around-the-clock basis, MobsterBoss decided to partner with HostDime to help maintain a stable hosting environment.

MobsterBoss never stops running, and Sonnie and his team rely heavily on HostDime for support to maintain a goal of 100% uptime.

“I have always been treated great,” Sonnie said. “Any issues I have had, HostDime handled them and went above and beyond what should be expected.”

HostDime’s team helped MobsterBoss migrate to two dedicated servers — one of which was built exclusively to handle the flood of MySQL requests the game demanded. And, when Sonnie’s lead programmer is out of pocket, HostDime’s staff is always available to walk the self-described technically-challenged owner through the complex processes necessary to keep the game live.

Since 2001, HostDime has been helping enterprise-level companies and businesses with large online audiences, like MobsterBoss, deliver mission-critical applications through its cloud, virtual, and dedicated servers, as well as colocation services. Operating expansive datacenters around the world, the company hosts upward of 3 million domains and is ranked among the top 50 cloud hosting companies.

From $50 and a Single Server to a Global Hosting Powerhouse

Vikki Fraser, HostDime’s Director of Marketing, told us the company’s rise to success might be surprising when considering its modest origins.

“Our founding story is quite an interesting one,” she said. “The company was basically started with a never-give-up attitude and a dedication to innovate.”

Manny Vivar, Founder and Owner of HostDime, was an aeronautical student on the path to gaining his commercial pilot’s license. Despite the promising aspects of his career path — he saw the promise and profit in the hosting industry — Manny decided his true passion lay in the then-mysterious cloud hosting industry.

HostDime’s Vikki Fraser told us how the company evolved from a single server to a global datacenter powerhouse.

“You have to know when to take advantage of an opportunity,” Manny said in an interview.

And that’s just what he did. After graduation, he, his brother, and two friends — Mark Gregan and Miguel Torres — started HostDime in late 2001 with just one server and $50.

“At one point in time, Manny found himself very connected to hosting, and ever since he started with that single server, we’ve grown,” Vikki said. “We eventually became incorporated in 2003.”

Since its beginnings, HostDime’s philosophy has always rested on a few fundamental goals:

  • To service clients at the highest possible level
  • To innovate and empower its clients
  • To work hard and be passionate
  • To provide the highest level of uptime globally
  • To maintain the highest level of integrity

HostDime has been self-funded from the start with an entirely in-house engineering team. Thus, the company is debt-free and boasts a stable long-term business model. HostDime’s bootstrap story is one driven by a passion for innovation and continues to inspire its employees today.

“I’ve been here six years, and I’ve been in the hosting business myself since the late ’90s,” Vikki said. “This is like my dream job. I’ve been in technology for a long time, and now I’m working for a really great technology company.”

VPS, Cloud, Bare Metal, and Colo Services Focused on the Enterprise

Once focused on single-site business hosting, HostDime has found that its approach is most effective providing dedicated and virtual private servers for larger businesses.

“When I joined the team, we did business and shared hosting,” Vikki said. “Because we’ve been more effective at the enterprise level, we’ve started leaving single-site hosting to our resellers that have their equipment with us.”

HostDime offers a full spectrum of services, from domain registration and dedicated, bare-metal server packages to colocation arrangements. The company’s VPS plans are available in Linux or Windows, and range from a single CPU and 2GB RAM to 3CPUs with 8GB RAM.

All VPS plans come with 15TB monthly bandwidth and SSD storage. HostDime also features OpenStack Cloud Servers for backups and scaling, as well as powerful dedicated servers that boast up to 12 CPU cores (with 24 threads), 32GB RAM, and burstable Gigabit uplink speeds.

With datacenters across the globe, HostDime offers colo opportunities in several countries. For its Orlando datacenter, HostDime provides spaces for quarter, half, and even full cabinets.

“The shared hosting industry started getting saturated quite a bit a few years ago,” Vikki said. “Luckily, we were solidly entrenched in the industry and focused more on dedicated servers for our enterprise-level clients.”

Top-Tier Support Takes Pressure and Time off IT Departments

MobsterBoss’s owner praised HostDime’s support team for guiding him through technical tasks when his actual IT department was unable to. The company’s support also helps many other clients who may have small — or otherwise overwhelmed — IT departments.

“HostDime has always been focused on customer service, and it’s been that way from the very beginning,” Vikki said. “We wanted to differentiate ourselves as the ones to really provide 24/7 local support.”

HostDime’s support teams are assigned to local clients, bringing down language and technical barriers that would otherwise make troubleshooting difficult. Providing excellent customer service is one of HostDime’s top goals.

Most of HostDime’s servers are advertised as fully managed, meaning that the host takes care of the technical aspects of server management, allowing companies to focus more on their business and clients.

“The majority of what we sell are fully managed servers, so that takes pressure and time off internal IT staff,” Vikki said. “IT personnel has a trusted partner they can call up at any time to do anything from mitigating a DDoS attack to providing a simple file backup.”

Enterprises not only save time but also cut costs significantly by employing what is essentially an outsourced team of IT experts.

Putting Shovels in the Ground to Build More Server Space

Space, according to Vikki, has become especially important to the company as it takes on more and more clients seeking colocation opportunities. To keep up with growing demands, HostDime plans to expand its office and build even more datacenters across the globe.

“We just built a new datacenter in Northern Brazil,” she said. “Right now, we have HostDime offices in Mexico, India, Colombia, the UK, Hong Kong, and the Netherlands.”

As HostDime continues to grow, its Florida offices are set to be consolidated into a single building.

“We’re also looking to put shovels in the ground for more server space,” Vikki said.

Vikki told us the company’s rapid growth and its passion for innovation are major driving factors in HostDime’s continued success and expansion.

As seen in MobsterBoss’s scenario, HostDime goes above and beyond for its clients, providing in-house IT support and fully managed server space. Free from technical worries, these clients are able to more fully focus on their own clientele and revenue streams.

“Manny wants to see all HostDime’s customers and employees succeed,” Vikki said. “He’s one of those people who says ‘If I rise, you rise.’”
